We have all been created with a desire to worship. God has made Himself known to us so that our worship would go to Him. But for those who suppress the truth about Him, that desire is misdirected to other things, often times toward the self. this then become idolatry.
You enter into an obsession that is destructive. It can result in anxiety over the future, guilt from the past or bitterness in the present.
This obsession cn devestate a life. But there is grace.
